History and Purpose
Sanger Area Humane Society (SHS) is a non-profit corporation formed in
1987, and is recognized by both state and federal governments as a tax-exempt charitable
organization. The society is overseen by a Board of Directors who responsible for setting
policy, fundraising, etc.
On May 15, 1987 we celebrated the opening of our animal shelter and
placement center in space provided in a veterinarian's office. Within a few weeks it
became readily apparent that we were a success and would need more space. For the next two
years we rented space in Sanger.
Finally,
in February 1990, we realized another milestone when we moved into our own property. We
own a two acre parcel on the banks of the Kings River
in the Sanger Riverbottom. We use the small house for administration and the housing of
cats.
In 1991 the Rotary Club of Sanger donated and constructed a new kennel
building to accommodate the dogs we have available. The
building was named in honor of Dr. Walter Barnhart, now deceased, a longtime
veterinarian and founder of Rotary in Sanger. Our adoption rate is well over 92% an
achievement not easily accomplished these days. Our Shelter has a contract with the City of Sanger to provide animal control services within
city limits. This includes investigation of bites, vicious animals, nuisances,
neglect and cruelty cases, pick up of stray animals and emergency services for those
animals whose owners are unknown. Additionally, we work closly with the Department of Fish and Game.
